Chicago’s landmarked @fineartsbuilding is home to two of the city’s oldest surviving theatres. The @studebaker_theater (pictured here) dates from 1898. Opened in a space originally built as a #studebaker carriage showroom, the theatre sat 1,200 with 34 box seats. As with many theatres, it was remodeled and reconfigured numerous times. At one point it served as a #moviehouse and was divided into 4 screens. After the latest renovation, it has returned to life as a #liveperformance space. In the 1930s it was given a new #artdeco facade as a result of the widening of #woodwardavenue. The #moviehouse failed in the 1950s, and the space was used by a church and retail stores. #bonstelletheatre in #detroit has an interesting history starting in 1902 as a #synagogue. After the congregation moved, the building was acquired by an actress named Bonstelle who converted it to a live performance space. In 1932 it became a #moviehouse called the Mayfair. #waynestateuniversity acquired the building in 1952 and restored it to a performance space. My guess is that Warhol didn’t think he was doing anything wrong when he created his portraits of Prince using the photo in question.
